On a recent trip I encountered a beer named Granat. It’s a semi-dark lager that has a malty taste with a mild bitterness, and reminds me of the Octoberfest beer made by Manchester Union brewery (although their beer has an intense bitterness).

A quick internet search doesn’t reveal much about the ingredients other than it’s made by mixing pale and speciality malts, and is 4.8%. However, from drinking it I suspect it uses Saaz hops.

I’ve made an educated guess about how to make this beer as a 10L brew:

Malts Bill
Bohemian Pilsner malt 81%
Munich Malt II 11.5%
CaraMunich type 2 6%
Carafa Special type 2 1.5%

The overall effect of the speciality malts should be to add a rich malty complexity, a caramel flavour, and some colour. Based on the country of origin of the beer I’ll be using Weyermann malts.

The beer had a mild bitterness, which I really enjoyed. But I want more bitterness so I’m going to add more hops than I suspect are used in the original:

Hops Amount Time
Saaz 20g Start of boil
Saaz 20g 30 min
Saaz 20g 15 min

For the yeast, I’ll most likely use a Czech pilsner yeast. It’ll be later in the year before I make this beer, but I wanted to record my recipe while it’s still in my head.
